Tour overview Etna Lateral Craters and Hornitos 4x4 Trek
A programme built by Etna Explore for the eruption season, when the summit craters are closed for safety. It pairs a 4x4 ascent to the foot of the summit craters with a long downhill trek across a remote, rarely walked side of the volcano. €100 per person, with the 4x4 transfer included. Direct booking with a reply within 24 hours.
The group meets at Piano Provenzana on the north flank (1,800 m) at 8:00 AM. The 4x4 climbs to Piano delle Concazze at 2,900 m, at the foot of the summit craters, where the guides pause for photographs and an introduction to the geology of the summit area. The 4x4 then drops the group to about 2,600 m, the trailhead for the walk.
From 2,600 m a roughly 12 km route runs entirely on foot and downhill, back to Piano Provenzana at 1,800 m. It crosses a remote corner of Etna where few people ever walk: lateral craters with solidified lava flows and the hornitos — small welded spatter cones, the 'little ovens' typical of the area — including a walk inside one of them. The route continues towards the Bottoniera craters of the 2002 eruption, with a picnic break along the way. Total duration about 5 hours.
